The 2026 Census begins today, May 4th! This will be Canada’s 24th national census. The census is mandatory to complete. By law, every household must complete a 2026 Census of Population questionnaire. If you are a farm operator, you are also required by law to complete the 2026 Census of Agriculture questionnaire.
They are encouraging online completion this year.
Census are a major item used by genealogists so please encourage everyone to complete them completely and accurately.
To protect your privacy the information you give stays private for 97 years. The government uses data from it to collect population growth etc. which they do publish.
Last census the government added a new box to check asking if you wanted your information kept private forever (not exactly their words). Please DO NOT check this box. Genealogist 100 years from now will be very disappointed to find no personal information about their ancestors. Please make others aware of this as well.

- Support: For help, residents can call the Census Help Line, especially if they lack reliable internet access.
Key Changes for 2026:
- Child Care Questions: The questionnaire has been modified to capture information on regular child care use and costs for children aged 13 and under to support the Canada Early Learning and Child Care Act.
- Focus Areas: The 2026 Census will include updated content regarding Indigenous Peoples, population groups, Canadian military experience, and housing.
